The SMU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each captured their fourth consecutive Conference USA Championship titles late February in Houston. The wins also marked the 13th overall conference championship for each squad.
Both teams look ahead to the NCAA Championships at College Station this weekend and next.
At the Austin Grand Prix on March 5, the men’s team swam a swift 1:29.98 to win the 200 free relay, securing an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
Junior Thomas Fadnes led the Mustang charge in the 50-meter course. His time of 0:22.88 established a Norwegian national record.
SMU followed the next day with an equally impressive performance in the 200 medley relay. Seniors Pontus Renholm, Grega Plevelj and Luka Vrtovec teamed with Fadnes to win the event and set a school record of 1:25.67.
Renholm went on to place first in the 100 back with an NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 0:56.01. Junior Edward Downes also won and recorded a provisional-qualifying time in the 200 fly (2:01.52).
For the women, junior Britney Yancey and sophomore Audra Egelnof earned NCAA bids as well at the Zone D Qualifying meet last weekend at the University of Missouri.
Yancey recorded a score of 607.95 in the three-meter springboard on Friday before she and Egelnof earned qualifying point totals Saturday in the one-meter event (524.40 and 523.85, respectively).
Egelnof followed suit on Sunday with yet another NCAA qualifying score (500.20) in the platform event.
The women’s championships begin Thursday and run through Saturday at Texas A&M’s Student Rec Center Natatorium. The men’s championships also take place in College Station March 26-28.
