The Mustang men’s tennis team made it a winning weekend, defeating both the University of Arkansas-Little Rock and Texas Southern University.
SMU played UALR Saturday in a tough match that lasted until 10 p.m., with SMU winning 5-2. It had an easier match Sunday when the men shut out Texas Southern 7-0.
Junior Federico Murgier played the No. 1 spot in both singles and doubles with partner Senior Henrik Soderberg. Murgier played a solid game, visibly frustrating his opponent Ivan Avila. He closed the match at 6-2, 6-2. Murgier and Soderberg defeated Texas Southern’s Ivan Avila and Frank Suares in a fast-moving, eight game pro-set doubles match.
Soderberg faced Suares again in the No. 3 singles match. After losing the first set 4-6, Soderberg came back to win the match 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Adolfo Solares defended the No. 5 singles spot against Christopher Gloc. It was a quick match, ending in a 6-0, 6-1 victory for Solares.
Sophomore David Kuczer paired up with Solares to clinch the No. 3 doubles match against Mateuss Wodznski and Kurt Gattiker. Texas Southern’s Wodznski suffered another loss in the No. 2 singles match, this time to SMU sophomore Alex Skrypko 6-2, 6-2. Wodznski had trouble keeping the ball on his own court and was no match for Skrypko’s powerful ground strokes.
Sophomore Oivind Alver began the day with a rough doubles match in the No. 2 spot. Double faults and numerous errors aggravated Alver. However, his partner, senior Peter Oredsson, kept his cool, and the two were able to pull out the match. Alver regained his concentration and defeated Kurt Gattiker in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 4 singles match.
The men’s next home match will be at 2 p.m. Friday against Lamar.
