The SMU women’s golf team placed 12th at the Central District Invitational this weekend in Parrish, Fla. Sophomore Kate Ackerson finished fifth overall at the par-72, 6,099-yard River Wilderness Golf Club. Ackerson shot her first career hole-in-one on the 138-yard seventh hole in the second round.
Ackerson’s success at the Central District Invitational comes after her head-to-head victories over golfers from Vanderbilt and Wake Forest. Her wins earned her the C-USA Golfer of the Week title for the second time this season.
The Mustangs competed at the Invitational without three of its starters, including All-Conference golfers Jennifer Ackerson and Laura Cross. J. Ackerson is expected to return to competition soon, but Cross is redshirting this season. Freshman Sarah Dodson was also absent from the links in Florida.
SMU’s Lacey Jones tied for 12th overall on the final day of the Invitational. The junior, who has earned the title of C-USA Golfer of the Week twice this season, finished at 8-over 224 (79-72-73). K. Ackerson shot 4-over 220, with a breakdown of 74-71-75.
Other Mustang golfers that participated included senior Ashley Deatherage (85-79-80-244-T65), senior Kristina Rothengatter (83-86-85-254-T71) and junior Michelle Cronan (91-84-87-262-T73).
The competition consisted of 14 teams, with SMU only able to top Nebraska and Tulsa. Other schools that competed include: Arkansas, Baylor, LSU, Michigan State, Missouri, Northwestern, Notre Dame, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M.
