As most of you should already be aware but perhaps are not, there is now a vacancy in the position of Student Body Secretary. Drew Washington resigned the position on Nov. 1. Now, students must make a choice between the three candidates. The elections began late last night, and while Ed Board understands that students are busy, It is imperative that you to get online to www.smu.edu/elections and vote.
Ed Board is here to offer some insight into this election, and hopefully make your job a little easier. After placing all the candidates in the hot seat for grueling and intensive interviews (involving some rope and a blindingly bright flashlight), we here at Ed Board feel confident in endorsing a candidate. While all three candidates are qualified and deserve your full consideration, we are proud to endorse (drum roll please – ) none other than Katherine Tullos!
You may be asking yourself, “But Ed Board, why should I vote for her?” Well, we’ll tell you what impressed us about this particular candidate and made her stand out from the rest.
Tullos is a sophomore political science and psychology major and has shown her commitment and enthusiasm for Senate since her freshman year. Last year, she was a member of the organizations committee, and this year she was appointed as chair. Furthermore, she is currently serving as the interim secretary, until the student body elects a new one. President Liz Healy appointed her to this position. The fact that she has placed confidence in her to step in and serve on such short notice, truly speaks for itself.
Tullos is outgoing and very approachable, which Ed Board thinks would make her an asset to the leadership of this campus.
The thing that stood out the most to Ed Board is her articulate vision for the secretary position. Tullos has a firm grasp of the nature of the responsibilities and the secretary’s relationship the rest of Senate. She also understands that the secretary’s constituency is the student body as a whole. If elected, she would try to create an open line of communication between the students and herself, to ensure that they are fully represented by their governing body. She explained to us two of her goals to accomplish this is by publishing the Senate minutes on the Senate Web site, as well as producing a Senate newsletter to be emailed to the student body.
Ed Board is very confident in endorsing Tullos. We feel that after giving every candidate consideration, Tullos is the individual who stood out the most as a natural leader who has a keen insight on the position. We hope that you this information will be helpful to you, but most importantly, Ed Board hopes you take the time to vote.
