Students gathered last night in the Hughes-Trigg Ballroom to compete in the second annual College Bowl campus tournament, which is part of this week’s Homecoming festivities. The North Area team won against the Delta Gamma/Lambda Chi team for the championship title in the final round.
The tournament began at 6 p.m. with a series of competing rounds involving two teams. In each round, each team of four members answered questions that were either toss-up or bonus, which counted for different points. Many of the questions involved lists of people, places or dates. The topics covered in the questions ranged from historical cultures to literature, art and science.
In addition, the teams were given a limited amount of time to respond with their answers.
The North Area team, which consisted of students from Virginia-Snider Hall and Shuttles Hall, began its winning streak by beating the Pi Beta Phi/Kappa Alpha team in the first round. In the second round, the team defeated the Kappa Alpha Theta team by more than 100 points. Finally, the team won against the Delta Gamma/Lambda Chi team with a score of 195 points to 70 points.
“Last year, the Virginia-Snider team was eliminated after winning one round,” sophomore James Longhofer said. “It feels a whole lot better to win all the rounds this year.”
The other teams that competed in the tournament included the Class of 2009/Senate, Team Xtreme, Tri Delta, CCM Wesley, Chi Omega, Alpha Chi Omega/Sigma Phi Epsilon, Service House/APO/SPARC, Kappa Keys and Pi Beta Phi/Kappa Alpha. Winners in the individual rounds included the Class of 2009/Senate, Delta Gamma/Lambda Chi, CCM Wesley, Kappa Alpha Theta and the North Area.
Another College Bowl tournament will be held in February and will be hosted by the Hughes-Trigg Student Center. Faculty, staff and students are welcome to participate in this competition.
