With the offense finally starting to click again, the SMU women’s soccer team won both its games last weekend to push itself into a tie for first place in C-USA with a record of 12-4-1 (6-1 C-USA).
The Mustangs’ two wins, a 4-0 win Friday night at Marshall and a 2-0 win over East Carolina Sunday afternoon, combined with a UTEP loss pushed SMU into a first-place tie with the University of Central Florida in C-USA standings.
Freshman defender Carley Phillips earned C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honors for her performance in anchoring the Mustangs defense to three straight shutouts and in scoring a goal each weekend game.
In Friday’s game against the Marshall Thundering Herd, SMU got off to a quick start as freshman forward Kirsten Moran scored a breakaway goal in the eighth minute. Marshall was able to keep the Mustangs off the scoreboard for the rest of the half, but in the 49th minute, junior Olivia O’Rear picked up her first assist of the match when she fed a pass to Autumn Browning on the goal-line for a tap in.
O’Rear also assisted on the Mustangs’ third goal as she sent a corner kick into the box that Phillips finished. Freshman Caitlin Carter finished off the scoring in the 69th minute when she sent a sharp-angle shot into the upper corner.
The Mustangs out-shot Marshall 22-4 for the game, with Marshall putting just two shots on goal.
Sunday’s game was statistically closer, but the result was the same. The Pirates were able to hold the Mustangs scoreless in the first half, but the team was awarded a penalty kick in the 80th minute, which Phillips calmly slotted home.
SMU didn’t get the insurance goal until the 90th minute, when Kimber Bailey crossed the ball to O’Rear, who put a shot past East Carolina goalkeeper Amber Campbell.
The Mustangs play their final regular season games of the season next weekend as Westcott Field as they take on UAB Friday night and Memphis Sunday afternoon.
