The No. 24 SMU women’s tennis team (19-2, 2-0 Conference-USA) extended its winning streak to nine matches, with a 6-0 win over the University of Arkansas-Little Rock (5-10), Wednesday morning at Turpin Tennis Stadium.
The contest was limited to singles competition because of threatening rain. The Mustangs’ afternoon match against the No. 28 DePaul University Blue Demons (15-2, 1-0 BIG EAST) was moved indoors to the Brookhaven Tennis facility due to inclement weather.
In the top singles spot, freshman Marta Lesniak defeated the Trojans’ Anne Weijenborg in straight sets (6-1, 6-1).
Freshman Aleks Malyarschikova and senior Kristen Reid followed suit with singles victories (both 6-2, 6-2) over their UALR counterparts.
Ranked in the Top 25 for the first time since 1989, SMU will travel to Wichita, Kansas, for a trio of contests this weekend as part of the Via Christi Collegiate Classic.
The Mustangs take on the No. 59 Nevada Wolf Pack (3-6, 0-1 Western Athletic Conference) Friday at 10 a.m. before facing the University of Louisville Cardinals (8-7) Saturday afternoon.
The team wrap up its weekend with a match against host Wichita State University (10-2). The first serve against the No. 66 Shockers is set for Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
