What could possibly be the reason thousands of people packed into Moody Coliseum to see a basketball game? We know it wasn’t because Memphis was in town, and it couldn’t have been to see SMU play… so what else could it have been?
In what I can only think to call a game of complete idiocy, ten men from The Ticket squared off against nine select members of the Lake Highlands women’s basketball team last night in Moody Coliseum. Whether it was a bunch of testosterone-inflated egos, a silly bet made over one too many beers or just men wanting to prove they are more dominant in sports is beyond me, but whatever the reason, the game was a sorry excuse to show off a lack of athletic ability on behalf of the men.
At first glance, it seems like this would just be a normal pick-up game between two very different groups of people. But look again. It’s ten men all over the age of about 30 taking on a team of underage high school girls. No wonder parents at Lake Highlands were in an uproar about the game. In fact, athletes had to willingly participate just to staff a roster. Go girls for taking on a bunch of stinky, sweaty old men.
Fueled by the huge upset of the 100-0 blowout by the Covenant School in Dallas over The Dallas Academy, members of The Ticket challenged the Covenant School to a game as if to prove that the high school team can in fact defeated, and also that it could be done by a group of old, out of shape men that haven’t seen the inside of a gym in years. I’m not saying it was a lack of respect that was extended towards the high school, but what was the station thinking trying to take on high school students in a basketball game?
What’s wrong with playing at least a men’s high school team, if not a collegiate team. I guess they figured their only, and rather slim, chance of winning was against a group of what I’m sure are rather talented athletes, or better yet, a group of men their own age. At least they couldn’t get in trouble for an inappropriate call. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t basketball a contact sport?
You have to give props to the Covenant School for politely declining the offer, explaining they didn’t want to add fuel to the fire of an already controversial win. When Lake Highlands extended the offer to take on the men’s team, it’s no wonder parents were upset to hear of the game. As a result, girls volunteered to play against Team Ticket, and thankfully, it seems the game was completed in a tasteful and fun manner. I mean, it would have to be for thousands to pack into Moody Coliseum – something SMU hasn’t seen in years.
The final score, 61-44 in favor of the Lake Highlands Thunder, thrilled me. Not because the girls beat the boys, but because hopefully it will shut these men up in thinking they are just so amazing and hopefully make them think twice before proposing such a ridiculous challenge.
