In honor of Health Fair Day, the Minority Association of Pre-Health Students held a blood drive in front of the flagpole on the Boulevard on Tuesday.
The blood drive was held across from a Vitamin Water promotion where students shot hoops to win free water.
The MAPS event promoted nutrition and aimed to raise awareness about hygiene, sexually transmitted infections and sun tanning, issues relevant to college campuses. MAPS auctioned off a free spray tan and had brochures on STIs available to the SMU community.
MAPS is a minority association of pre-medical students. It provides a place for similar students to volunteer at hospitals like UT Southwestern and become more involved in the community. Students involved in this association are able to attend panels consisting of current doctors, giving members the chance to interact with medical professionals.
This group also encourages high school students to pursue careers in the medical profession.
“MAPS is a really good opportunity to explore pre-health professions and get involved in the community,” SMU freshman Michelle Clincon said.
“The health fair is a way for us to share our knowledge with other people as well.”
