Two winners in the Student Art Contest will be announced today.

The two winners will receive cash prizes and their artwork will be permanently displayed in the student center. Art from past years has been used to decorate the portico and promenade rooms, as well as placed along the halls.

Artworks were submitted by April 9 and displayed in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center Commons from April 13 to 16.

Works were displayed so staff members and students could vote for their favorite painting, drawing, collage, sculpture or photograph.

Mariana Sullivan, marketing manager at the Hughes Trigg Student Center, said that displaying the art is a “nice way to remember students after they have graduated.”

She also said that since it is a student center, student art is an appropriate decoration and leaves a mark from that student and year.

This contest was open to all majors, not just Meadows students, to give everybody a chance to show personal, or hidden, talents.

“It is intended to be a fun way for people to express their creativity,” Sullivan said.

In the past, Sullivan said that there have been many sculptures and paintings submitted. However, this year has shown an increase in photographs.

“It is interesting that people have chosen to submit photos,” Sullivan said. “It is a good way to show their interest in using their nice digital cameras.”
