While the Mustangs may have finished 12th as a team, sophomore Bryson Dechambeau finished third at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational.
Firing a final-round 67 Dechambeau finished one stroke off the lead and tied for the low round of the day.
In the final round, Dechambeau churned out four birdies and it wasn’t until his second to last hole that he got a boogey. His third place finish ties his second-best finish of his career.
“It’s a great start of the year for Bryson,” Gregory said. “Bryson and Austin [Smotherman] played really well today. We played poorly as a team, however we will learn a lot from this and we will be very motivated to get better. Fortunately, it’s the first event of the year, and we know what we need to do to get better.”
Having battle back from a rough start, Smotherman moved up 16 positions in the field to finish 23rd.
No. 21 SMU was one of the eight featured ranked teams in the tournament. No. 1 Alabama went home with a first place finish by 18 strokes over Texas.
