COLLEGE STATION, TX – Against the number 10 team in the country, the SMU Mustangs (1-2) were beaten 42-13 by Texas A&M; in College Station Saturday night.

There wasn’t much good to take away from the lopsided loss, but senior wide receiver Keenan Holman had a breakout game, catching 10 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown.

Coming into the game, wide outs Jeremy Johnson and Darius Joseph were both in the top five nationally for catches per game. But, tonight, they were held to a total of 85 yards on 12 catches, as Texas A&M; head coach Kevin Sumlin’s defense keyed in on the Mustang threats.

SMU was its own worst enemy for much of the game, missing tackles on defense and accruing 16 total penalties for 111 yards, while the Aggie offense took advantage for 581 yards of offense on the night, including 346 from sophomore quarterback Johnny Manziel.

The best play on defense for the Mustangs came on a Manziel interception by junior defensive back Hayden Greenbauer in the first quarter.

Following SMU’s first turnover of the year, the Mustangs got on the board with a 42-yard field goal, but struggled to maintain consistency after that drive.

Although the Mustangs made a decent showing in the fourth quarter, it was too little too late, as the Aggies had amassed a 42-6 lead before senior quarterback Garrett Gilbert and the SMU offense finally began to click.

Gilbert led the team on a 75-yard drive, 7-play drive that culminated in Holman’s score to take the sting out of an otherwise frustrating evening in College Station.

SMU will hope to correct its mistakes before next Saturday’s rivalry game in Fort Worth against a struggling TCU.
