My quest to learn the musical instrument struck a chord much greater than the beautiful sound of a perfect stroke.
I decided to learn the guitar, but I walked away learning more about life

KATs Making Tracks 2013

On October 6, 2013, SMU students, faculty, alumnae, friends, and a even few pets gathered for the annual Kappa Alpha Theta 5K: KATs Making Tracks. The 5K is Theta’s main philanthropic event, and all proceeds gathered go to the Dallas Court-Appointed Special Advocates. CASA is Theta’s national philanthropy and aides neglected or abused children in court.

The event kicked off bright and early at 8:30 a.m. with the 1-mile fun run around the SMU Campus. Immediately following the fun run was the 5k through the SMU Campus and a portion of University Park. This year, the weather was exceptionally chilly and in the mid-50s – perfect running weather.

At the event, businesses such as Kind Healthy Snacks and My Fit Foods set up tents and handed out samples to the runners. This year, 380 people registered and even more came out to support the cause.

During the race, Theta members and friends cheered runners on and handed them water when needed. They were enthusiastic and excited to be helping a great cause like Dallas CASA.

When all of the runners returned to Moody Coliseum, a raffle began. They offered prizes and certificates from a myriad of donors in the Dallas area who were equally ecstatic to participate.

This year’s 5K was headed by 5K Chair Eleanor Rosler and Assistant 5K Chair Lizzy Bennett. Both girls, along with the others in the Theta Chapter, produced a successful event.

Last year, Theta was able to raise over $17,000. This year, they planned to raise $25,000. A week before the event, they had already surpassed last year’s earnings. Kappa Alpha Theta excelled in organizing a fun and entertaining even with a meaningful cause. Each year, the Theta 5K brings SMU students, alumnae, and friends together and helps those in need. This year was no exception.
