SMU volleyball took on East Carolina on Sunday for a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-16) victory in Moody Coliseum.

The Mustangs are now 16-4 on the season, 5-3 in the American Athletic Conference and 10-1 at home.

SMU scored 10 of the first 15 points in the first set and the Pirates didn’t give up. They battled back to take an 18-17 lead after their third block in a row. It was a point-for-point set tied at 23-23 when Cailin Bula hit a game changing kill to set up the set point and the winning block.

With one win down, the Mustangs came back to win the second set in another close 25-21 victory. SMU was down 20-17 and railed back for an 8-1 run to take the win in the set. It was Caroline Young who paced SMU’s offense with six kills, hitting .545 in the set.

As a team SMU hit .308 as a team, with only three attack errors.

In the third set the Mustangs took an easy 25-16 win to claim a victory in the third set.

Junior Abbey Bybel finished the match with 10 kills and 12 digs, marking her ninth double-double of the season. Setter, Avery Acker tallied 38 assists and a team-high 13 digs for her team-best 15th double-double of the year. Morgan Heise also had 10 digs and five assists.

Young finished with a match-high 11 kills and tallied 10 digs. She recorded her
fifth double-double of the season and back-to-back double-doubles for
the first time this season. It was only two weeks ago that Young suffered an ankle
injury in the first set at Memphis and if it is still bothering her it was sure hard to tell. The senior hit .323 in the match
with just one error in 31 attempts.

ECU fell to 9-8 overall, 2-6 in The American after the loss to the Mustangs.

SMU begins a stretch of four straight road matches Friday at Temple at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT. SMU will return to Moody Coliseum on Nov. 7 against Memphis.
