After his performance against Cincinnati, first year Jared Rice was named the American Athletic Conference men’s soccer Defensive Player of the Week by league officials on Monday.
Rice, a Plano, Texas, native recorded his seventh assist of the season on a goal that ended up being the match-winner against Cincinnati on Saturday.
SMU won 2-0 and Rice was part of a back line that allowed only three shots on goal, in what was SMU’s fifth shutout in 2014.
Rice was named Rookie of The Week on Oct.13, so this marks his second conference honor in 2014.
SMU goalkeeper Michael Nelson and forward Idrissa Camara were each named to the weekly honor roll for their play against Cincinnati as well.
Nelson made three saves in the shutout, while Camara scored the match-winner off Rice’s assist.
The Mustangs secured the No. 3 seed for the AAC tournament and will host No. 6 UCF on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT. Live stats and video will be available at SMUMustangs.com.
