The SMU women’s soccer team swept the University of Oklahoma Saturday night in the final game of the Verizon Women’s College Soccer Showcase in a 1-0 victory courtesy of Sarah Benchaita.
The game was held at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, which is the home venue for Major League Soccer’s FC Dallas team.
A cross pass from teammate Lauren Shepherd led to Benchaita’s game-winning goal in the first half, giving the Mustangs their second shutout of the spring season. SMU’s first shutout of the season came in a 0-0 draw against Baylor.
“I guess Lauren gets the assist, because she crossed the ball, but that goal came on the end of about 12 consecutive passes,” said head coach Brent Erwin in a press release. “We had some great passing, and Sarah was in the right place at the right time, and when the opportunity presented itself, she finished it.”
In response to goalkeeper Ashley Gunter’s shutout, Erwin said that while she had a very solid performance, she benefited greatly from a very strong performance by the Mustangs’ defense.
“We defended well as a unit. [Gunter] didn’t have to make that many saves,” said Erwin.
SMU’s second-team All-Central Region defender Carly Phillips missed the game, but she was replaced with Krystal Bailey. Kim Peabody, Katie Leonard, and Kristin Medeiros all did a “terrific” job, according to Erwin.
SMU was among four teams invited to play in the showcase. “We’re really happy we got to play in the showcase,” said Erwin. “To play a quality Big 12 team like Oklahoma . . . and to come away with a shutout victory is a real highlight of our spring”
The team will wrap up its spring season when it hosts Texas A&M Commerce at Westcott Field on April 19 at 1 p.m.
