It’s January and for many this means New Year’s resolutions. The most popular resolution? Getting fit and losing weight (surprise, surprise). If you’re like me, the best resolution is no resolution. But for those of you who chose to commit to a healthy 2015, here are some tips and tricks to make it through the upcoming year.
1. Create a checklist with small goals
Make a list of goals to complete every few weeks or every month. These changes can include walking to school or work, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, and grabbing some fruit instead of cookies. Every little change counts when completing a resolution. Give yourself small rewards along the way when you accomplish these goals.
2. Eat at healthier restaurants
Encourage your friends and family to make a trip to a healthier fast-food spot rather than the traditional McDonald’s or Whattaburger. This way you will not be tempted by the french fries and milkshakes on the menu (which always sound much better than that salad). Opt for these healthier choices as often as possible or visit restaurants that provide healthy menu items.
3. Get a gym buddy
This is crucial if you want to stick to a workout routine. Having someone there to keep you accountable and get your butt of the couch is necessary on those days when all you want to do is watch Netflix. Find someone who is also making a resolution this year to remind each other of your goals, or ask your intense and fit roommate to physically push your butt out the door when he or she heads to the gym.
4. Take your vitamins
Taking your vitamins not only keeps you healthy, but also gives you those extra nutrients you may be missing from your diet. Special supplements can help support strong nails and hair, while others support bone density and heart health.
5. Do not put so much pressure on yourself
New Year’s resolutions are meant to be stepping stones to create change. They are not the end-all be-all of your life. They do not define you if you complete them or fail them. Do not beat yourself up if you decide to eat some ice cream or even a whole gallon. Life is too short my friends.
