Living on campus is arguably the most quintessential part of the college experience. Dorms, cafeterias, grassy quads, fountains, and all kinds of people exist around the average college campus.
Luckily for us, SMU has all those things in spades – especially the fountains. But what makes living on campus at SMU so special is its size. You will never go far across campus without running into somebody you know, but at the same time there are so many students you will always be able to make new friends. SMU offers plenty of unique experiences that can only be offered by living on campus.
Dorm living will be, at times, the best and worst part of your college experience. There is nothing like being bored and having the ability to walk down the hall and find someone to hang out with. Having all your friends as your neighbors is a great feeling and something that only happens when you’re living in a dorm.
Having a roommate is a new experience for most people as well. Living with someone can present challenges depending on each of your schedules, but it can also bring some great times with it. Whether it’s sharing the burden of 3:00 a.m. fire alarms or trying to figure out how to put together a futon, you and your roommate will have some fantastic times together. But seriously, get some help with the futon, it’s not easy.
Another great aspect of living on campus is the food SMU provides for your constant hunger. Umphrey Lee (better known as Umph), Arnold (better known as Arnie’s) and Mac’s Place (which is just Mac’s Place) are all dining areas that have unique food options to satisfy whatever it is that you’re looking for.
Umph and Arnie’s are across campus from one another. so depending on the location of your dorm, you’ll find yourself visiting one a great deal more than the other. Mac’s Place is another story altogether. Not only does it provide fresh food from behind the counter, it also operate as a convenience store selling all kinds of snacks and various products. The buildings are always packed and the mix of people you’ll be sure to find means you’ll never have to eat alone.
The SMU campus itself is something to be proud of. From the Boulevard down to the football stadium, SMU is as gorgeous on the outside as it is on the inside.
With our proudly absurd number of fountains painting the quads and sun shining down on our green grass, SMU is a quite simply a beautiful place to be. Whether it’s the middle of spring and the 100 degree weather has students running around playing football on Dallas Hall lawn, or it’s dead winter and snowball fights are raging outside the dorms, SMU is a vibrant community filled with wonderful group of people. Living on campus is the best way to experience this community, and I hope you have as much fun with it as I have.
