The SMU Mustangs suffered a 55-14 loss to Navy this weekend, falling to 1-9 on the season.
After receiving the kickoff, the Mustangs punted the ball away to Navy after just three plays. Navy drove the ball down the field on a 14 play, 70-yard drive, which ended in a four-yard touchdown run by Keenan Reynolds.
The next two drives for both SMU and Navy ended the same way, with three-and-outs for the Mustangs and touchdown drives for the Midshipmen. On their fourth drive, the Mustangs put together a promising 46-yard drive which ended in a blocked 33-yard field goal.
On the ensuing possession, Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds completed a 72-yard pass for a touchdown, giving the Midshipmen a 28-0 lead. However, on the Mustangs’ final drive of the half, SMU drove the ball 68-yards down the field for a touchdown run by quarterback Matt Davis.
On their first drive of the second half, Navy capped off a 70-yard drive, which included two fourth down conversions, with a 19-yard touchdown run, making the score 34-7. However, SMU quickly rebounded as Davis found Kevin Thomas for a 32-yard touchdown pass to make the score 34-14.
Navy’s following drive ended with a punt after just three plays. However, SMU turned the ball over on downs, giving the ball back to the Midshipmen.
Navy capitalized on its good field position to extend its lead on a 32-yard touchdown run by Reynolds. On the first play of SMU’s next drive, after a promising return from Deion Sanders Jr., Davis threw an interception, giving Navy the ball back in SMU territory.
Navy took advantage, making quick work of the SMU defense and scoring another touchdown, furthering its lead to 48-14. SMU had an interception called back due to a roughing the passer penalty on the drive.
After another solid return by Sanders Jr., the Mustangs turned the ball over on downs again. Navy increased its lead to 55-14 with an eight-yard touchdown run.
SMU ended the game by throwing an interception, allowing Navy to run down the clock and claim the victory.
Navy’s Keenan Reynolds set the NCAA record for career rushing touchdowns during the game, generating 218 total yards and five touchdowns. Meanwhile, SMU’s Matt Davis only completed eight of 22 passes over the course of the game, with one touchdown and one interception.
SMU remains winless in conference play this season, but still has two opportunities to capture a win against Tulane and Memphis. The Mustangs will take on Tulane on Nov. 21.
