The Dallas Police Department said a body found in the Trinity River viaduct most likely belongs to the missing SMU police officer Mark McCullers, according to the Dallas Morning News.
The article said “the body, reportedly in uniform, was found in the river near Oak Lawn Avenue and East Levee Street. Dallas Police Maj, Jimmy Vaughn said an SMU officer made the discovery about 2:30 p.m.”
In addition to the Dallas Police Department dive team and SMU Police Department, NBC 5 said the Dallas Fire-Rescue, Dallas County Sheriff’s Department and the Texas Game Warden all responded.
The reported officers on scene paid their respects after the body was recovered by draping an American flag over the body, WFAA-TV said.
Office McCullers was announced missing by SMU Police Chief Richard Shafer on July 5 when the Highland Park Department of Public Safety reported the police officer was “working as a private security guard at a construction site when he and his car were swept away by high water” near Turtle Creek in Highland Park.
A few weeks ago on July 28, a memorial service was held at McFarlin Auditorium for Officer McCullers where the SMU and Dallas community celebrated his life.
The DPD has not yet confirmed an identity, but did state on Twitter there is a “high probability” the recovered body is SMU Officer McCullers.
