Former SMU basketball standout Markus Kennedy will start his professional career overseas. The 6-foot-9-inch forward has signed on to play with Yesilgiresun Belediye of the Turkish Basketball Super League on Monday. The details of the contract have not yet been disclosed.
Kennedy, 25, is a former American Athletic Conference player of the year award winner and graduated from SMU this May after a three-year career with the Mustangs. As a senior last season, Kennedy averaged 9.3 points per game, 1.2 blocks per game and 6.4 rebounds per game to help SMU finish with a 25-5 record.
The big man worked out with the Los Angeles Clippers but was ultimately not selected in this summer’s NBA draft and did not play in this year’s NBA Summer League.
The Philadelphia native will join former teammates Nic Moore (Enel Brindisi/Italy) and Jordan Tolbert (Junior Casale/Italy) as members of last year’s SMU team starting their careers in Europe.
