For the first time in program history, SMU volleyball won an NCAA Tournament match.
The Mustangs swept Texas A&M 3-0 in Austin Friday night to set up a Saturday night match with Texas. The victory brought SMU’s overall record to 26-7 for the year, and dropped Texas A&M to 21-9.
SMU won the three sets 25-23, 25-23 and 25-18. Junior Katie Hegarty recorded 14 kills, tying an SMU NCAA Tournament record, and added five blocks. Freshman setter Kendall Patterson added 10 digs and 36 assists. Kristen Stehling also had a good game; with ten kills, three blocks and an ace.
In the final set of the match, Texas A&M scored four straight points to cut an SMU lead to 17-15. SMU took seven of the next eight points, eventually finishing off Texas A&M by virtue of a Janielle Giordano kill.
“This particular match we just played, in my opinion, was our best,” head coach Lisa Seifert said.
The Mustangs will have to keep up this impressive play moving forward as they will face a talented Texas team. The Longhorns are 23-4 and coming off a sweep of Texas-Rio Grande Valley. They are seeded fourth overall in the tournament.
