White House: Troop cut ‘remarkable achievement’

VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass. (AP) — The White House is hailing the Iraq troop drawdown as a “truly remarkable achievement.”

White House counterterrorism chief John Brennan gave that assessment to reporters Tuesday as the U.S. troop level in Iraq sank below 50,000 for the first time since the U.S.-led invasion over seven years ago. Brennan was at Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., where President Barack Obama is vacationing.

Brennan said the successful drawdown was made possible by the increasing strength of the Iraqi forces. He added that terrorist attacks are still a problem in Iraq, but that the violence is at a “reduced level”.

In Washington, Vice President Joe Biden called the troop reduction a “remarkable milestone.”
