The women’s soccer team tied the Memphis Tigers 1-1 in double overtime on Sunday at home at Wescott Field.
SMU opened the match with an early attack on goal in the eighth minute by sophomore Shelby Redman. Memphis answered with its own campaign in the 16th minute with a missed shot over the goal.
The Mustangs continued to pressure the Tigers with six other shots in the first half, but the team was unable to finish.
SMU started the second half with a shot by sophomore midfielder Rikki Clarke that was stopped by Memphis, who answered seconds later with a shot that went wide.
The rally continued with shots on goal in the 48th minute by SMU and in the 50th minute by Memphis.
Memphis freshman Christi Padgett scored the only goal for the Tigers in the 51st minute off a cross by junior Cristabel Oduro.
Senior forward Kenzie Scovill answered for the Mustangs in the 55th minute with a header on the near post off a corner kick by fellow senior Mallory Baum.
The goal is Scovill’s ninth of the season and 17th of her career.
SMU attempted nine more shots on goal to pull out a win before the end of regulation, but it was unable to connect to the back of the net.
The teams headed into overtime where the Mustangs had four more goal attempts to no avail, forcing them into double overtime where they were again unable to score.
The tie puts the Mustangs at (8-6-4) for the season and (4-2-4) in Conference USA. The team heads to Tulsa next to take on the Golden Hurricane on Oct. 26.
