The Mustangs had an early afternoon game on Nov. 22 in Moody Coliseum, looking for a good start to their weekend. While Boston College’s Golden Eagles were traveling and on a three game losing streak, the Mustangs were feeling confident for Friday.
They entered the match looking to extend their winning streak to six games, and that is exactly what they did. The Mustang’s have been working hard day after day to keep winning.
“In our last stretch of matches, I’ve been so proud of them,” said coach Sam Erger. “We really are starting to figure out how to go and set the tone of the match and let the other team realize that we are here to freakin play.”
The Mustangs started the game strong, scoring consistently.. SMU grad student Malaya Jones contributed multiple aces while SMU senior Averi Carlson dished out assists to her teammates eventually winning the first set 25-17.
Entering the second set, the Mustangs felt comfortable, keeping a chip on their shoulder to push through the rest of the game.
Senior Jordyn Schilling was everywhere on the court, diving for the ball multiple times and chasing it far out of bounds to save the point. Plays like these are what gets the crowd excited. Eventually, they won the second match, 25-16.
Going into the third set, the Mustangs knew exactly what it took to finish the match off . At one moment, they scored six points in a row. Boston College was fatigued and had no answer for the attacks and persistent defense of SMU. Ending the match early, winning the final set 25-8 and extending their win streak.
SMU improves its ACC record to 14-3 and is tied for second place in the conference. They play Syracuse next on Nov. 23 and have a clear opportunity to win out the rest of their last three conference games.
