Mustang volleyball took second place in last weekend’s Indiana Credit Union Invitational, beating Mercer and Chattanooga, but falling to Indiana on Saturday night. Juniors Caitlin Rainbird and Rachel Giubilato were named to the All-Tournament team after Giubilato posted double-doubles against both Mercer and Indiana. Rainbird had 34 kills and 21 digs in the tournament. Freshman Kendra Kahanek continued her contribution to the team statistics by notching 23 kills and 10 digs throughout the tournament.
SMU’s first-ever meeting with Mercer was dominated by the Mustangs. Mercer fell in three games (30-12, 30-17, 30-18) advancing SMU to 8-4 for the season. The Mustangs held the lead for the majority of all three games with sophomore Stefanie Kons posting 38 assists and freshman Candice Davis getting 14 digs.
The Mustangs took on Chattanooga and Indiana in a double-header on Saturday. The Mocs from Chattanooga proved to be a bit more of a challenge to the Mustangs than Mercer, but SMU pulled out a victory in three games (30-21, 30-21, 30-26). Game one and two were battles, but the Mustangs managed to take control in time for a win in each game. Chattanooga also fell to Indiana, but was able to beat Mercer to take third in the tournament.
After two wins, SMU was unable to continue their streak and fell to tournament host Indiana in three games (30-26, 30-24, 30-24).
Giubilato posted her seventh double-double for the season and freshman Adrienne Zielasko had seven kills and three blocks in the match.
Game one had nine ties and three lead changes while the Mustangs and the Hoosiers battled for every point. Game two and three were full of back and forth, but SMU made numerous errors they couldn’t overcome.
The Mustangs fell in a hard fought match, putting them second to the Hoosiers in the tournament. SMU volleyball is now 9-5 for the season.
The volleyball team heads to Florida to take on UCF on Sept. 22.
