The men’s basketball team was close to winning against UTEP. The score was tied 53-53 in the final second when Robert Nyakundi hit what appeared to be the game winning shot, a 3-pointer that looked to be a buzzer-beater to win the game. The play was then reviewed, and Nyakundi’s game winner was negated because the ball had not left his hands as time expired.
In overtime, UTEP took the lead and kept it for the rest of OT. The final score of the game was 70-64 despite the close game throughout. The scoring was pretty well distributed for the Mustangs, as Jalen Jones led the team with 12, while Jeremiah Samarripas had 11.
The Mustangs shot the ball well on Saturday, shooting 54 percent in regulation. They had trouble converting in overtime though, shooting just 25 percent in the period.
The Mustangs now move to 9-8 on the season, 1-2 in conference, which puts them at eighth place in Conference USA. SMU will come back home to play its next game against Houston on Jan. 18 at 7 p.m.
