New members of Student Senate inaugurated

Healy takes oath for presidency, gives first speech

The 92nd assembly of the SMU Student Senate was sworn in Thursday to help kick off Mane Event.

Outgoing Student Body President Chip Hiemenz thanked all of the people he worked with over the past year before swearing in the student body president for 2005-2006, Liz Healy.

“She has the potential to do wonderful things for SMU,” he said.

In her first speech as student body president, Healy thanked the members of her family for motivating her to challenge herself.

Healy hopes to continue on the progress the Student Senate made this past school year (when she was student body vice president) in the upcoming year.

“I look forward to continuing work with these dedicated Mustangs,” she said. The main concern Healy plans to address is student apathy. Not enough students are involved around campus according to Healy.

After Healy was sworn in, she helped swear in her fellow student body officers, vice president Taylor Russ and secretary Drew Washington. Then, all the 2005-2006 senators and chairs were sworn in.

Before the swearing in ceremony, Student Senate advisor Arlene Manthey gave her farewell speech as advisor.

Manthey said that students at SMU are “truly empowered … to make a difference.”

“I’m so very fired up for all of you,” she said. “You will take Student Senate to new heights.”

University President R. Gerald Turner added that he was “looking forward to working with Liz, Taylor and Drew.”
