Student dies after being found in Fondren Library

Former SMU graduate student Philco Yat-Fai Poon died July25.

Officers and EMS responded to a medical emergency call from theCMIT level of Fondren library where Poon, 35, was watching afilm.

“When we noticed that he was in distress we called 911immediately,” said Clyde Putman who works in the library.Putman said the ambulance arrived within minutes of the call.

Poon was transported to a nearby hospital where he waspronounced dead by the attending physician.

An official autopsy report has not yet been released, butofficers believe the death to be medically related, because thereis no evidence of foul play.

Poon attended SMU from the fall of 2000 through spring of 2002.He graduated with a master’s degree in science while majoringin applied mathematics.
