Questions concerning the status of transfer quarterback Garrett Gilbert are beginning to circulate as word that Gilbert has not enrolled in classes for the spring semester.
This has nothing to do with the recent business works of Coach June Jones in the media within the past month.
However, it does have everything to do with when Gilbert will be able to play for the Mustangs.
As originally announced, Gilbert was set to transfer from the University of Texas to SMU beginning in the spring of 2012. Per NCAA transfer rules, however, Gilbert would have to sit out an entire season before playing. Setting the 2013 season as his start date on the field.
“I’ll be staying at UT for one more semester and hopefully I will be able to graduate in May, and then I’ll report up to SMU after that in June for summer workouts,” Gilbert said.
Gilbert, having completed enough of his major at UT to graduate early, made the decision to graduate in the spring from the University of Texas upon enrolling at SMU to get his Masters, during which he will be eligible to play as a Mustang before 2013.
For SMU this simply changes the original plans for Gilbert to be apart of practices during the spring and moves up his potential playing time at SMU.
