With the constant traffic and slew of restaurants in Snider Plaza, it can be easy to miss Food from Galilee, a tiny space nestled between Flavors from Afar and Crème de la Cookie.
The Eastern Mediterranean restaurant is the perfect pit stop for a fast, flavorful lunch. The great location means that SMU students are within walking distance from tangy, creamy, hummus gyros stuffed with tender meat, or plates of crispy hot falafel served with a zesty Tahini sauce.
If you are unfamiliar with Mediterranean cuisine, a gyro or falafel sandwich is a safe, delicious bet. Gyros are pita sandwiches filled with lamb, beef or chicken and topped with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, onions and an unbeatable gyro sauce. Mediterranean cuisine is a good choice for vegetarians as well. Try the falafel sandwich, crunchy chickpea patties stuffed in a pita sandwich, served with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and Tahini sauce.
In addition to sandwiches, Food from Galilee offers both meat and vegetarian entrees for less than $8 during lunch. You can try the shwarma platter, spicy sautéed beef served with rice and soup or a salad, or you can indulge in tender, juicy chicken kabob, which also comes with rice and the choice of a soup or salad.
Whatever you get, do not skip the hummus. Not only is hummus an essential appetizer at any Middle Eastern restaurant, Food from Galilee has one of the best chickpea spreads in Dallas. The puree of chickpeas, Tahini, lemon juice and garlic comes with warm, chewy pita bread and is the perfect accompaniment to anything on the menu.
The restaurant has four kinds of desserts on the menu. Try the baklava, a Middle Eastern pastry stuffed with pistachios, walnuts or cashews. For drinks, you can order soda or coffee, or try something a little more unique like guava juice. But be aware that the juice is just canned. While Food from Galilee does not serve alcohol, it is B.Y.O.B. and there is no cork fee.
Prices are another attractive factor for students. An appetizer and sandwich at lunch cost less than ten dollars. During dinner hours, prices jump about $2 to $3 per entrée, but everything on the menu is still under $13.
Family owned and unpretentious, Food from Galilee will satisfy any Mediterranean craving. Stop by between classes or for a shopping break, but be sure to try the delicious, cheap fare that Food from Galilee offers. A takeout option is also available.
