The SMU Quidditch Team is flying into its season and sweeping the competition away at its first tournament for the 2015-2016 school year.
This year’s team will travel to Huntsville, Texas for the fifth annual Breakfast Taco Tournament, playing other collegiate teams like Texas State University and Sam Houston State University. SMU’s pool consists of Texas State, University of Texas at San Antonio and Sam Houston State University, Division 2 Champions of last year’s world cup.
Other universities such as Baylor and the University of Texas will also be in attendance, but they will be competing in another bracket.
“We’re new, but they’re learning fast. I just want the team to see how awesome and competitive Quidditch is,” said Lizzie Wilson, captain and first-year graduate student.
While the sport itself is relatively new with its start in 2005, the SMU team began last year. The team practices each Friday from 4-5 p.m. on the Dallas Hall Lawn. Throughout the season, they challenge other schools in various tournaments and games.
Wilson said that the team looks promising as more members have been consistently attending practices.
Wilson came across the sport in the summer of 2014 after driving a friend to his Quidditch practice. She then continued with the sport by joining the Arlington community team. Wilson brings the knowledge she learned from these competitions to the SMU team.
