The SMU women’s golf team finished the fall segment of their 2015-2016 season last week. The team captured three top-five finishes in just four events.

The Mustangs started the season strong by winning the team title at their first tournament, the 2015 Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational, on Sep. 8. The event was held at Colbert Hills Golf Course in Kansas. SMU recorded the second lowest 54-hole score in tournament history, carding a 9-over 873 total.

Junior Lindsey McCurdy finished first individually after a final round 66 helped her reach two-under overall. Junior Katie Page, senior Alexandra Rossi, and first-year Brigitte Dunne also played well in the win.

Two weeks later, SMU finished in fifth place at the 2nd Annual East & West Match Play Challenge. Finding itself in seventh place after the first two rounds of team stroke play, the team rallied to defeat Wisconsin and Penn State in the consolation bracket. First-year Haley Tygret played very well in the stoke play portion of the event.

The Mustangs came in seventh out of 14 teams in the 2015 Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational on Oct. 20. McCurdy and Jenny Haglund tied for tenth at the event.

In the last event of the fall season on Oct. 27, SMU captured fourth place at The Alamo Invitational. The team’s final round 283, which was the second lowest in a round since 1993, saw all five Mustangs finish even-par or better.

“We have some time now to reflect on our season and our stats and we will work to get better for the spring season,” said Head Coach Jeanne Sutherland. “I’m proud of this team’s attitude and work ethic and I know we will be ready to compete.”

The team will not play again until Feb. 12, when it travels to Tallahassee, Fla. for the Florida State Match Up.
