Hundreds of SMU alumni returned to the hilltop to celebrate homecoming 2019– ‘A Tradition as Old as Time.’

Student Foundation president Kayleigh Dilworth said that homecoming is vital to connecting with the SMU community.

“Homecoming is really just an opportunity for all of SMU to get together and celebrate what makes SMU so special,” Dilworth said.

Student organizations showcased their hard work as they took their floats to the Boulevard.

Dilworth said that homecoming at SMU has evolved over the past few years as non-Greek organizations also take part in the festivities. Dilworth said that this step was to make homecoming more inclusive and provide the best representation of SMU.

“Just having all of aspects of campus really represented in homecoming was something that was really important to us,” Dilworth said.

SMU Alumna Taylor Cole Longacre noticed a change in the student body over homecoming weekend.

“There’s a cohesiveness among the students and I feel like we all have a sense of common purpose and common vision,” Longacre said.

SMU’s talent also took the stage for ‘Pigskin Revue’ which is the longest standing tradition at SMU.

Stan Stevenson first graduated from SMU in 1976 and said that he tries to attend homecoming every year. Stevenson had some advice for current SMU students.

“Walk across campus and soak up how beautiful it is and how lucky you are to be here,” Stevenson said. I can remember doing that… you know, whenever that was, 40 something years ago and I loved it–every minute of it and I still do.”

Mustangs sealed the weekend with a win against East Carolina University.
