With many facing food insecurities in the Dallas area, SMU Dedman School of Law students and alumni team up during the pandemic to volunteer at the North Texas Food Bank.
The North Texas Food Bank is a nonprofit organization located in Dallas, Texas with a mission “to close the hunger gap in North Texas by providing access to nutritious food,” said Trisha Cunningham, President and CEO of the North Texas Food Bank.
During this pandemic, SMU Dedman has been seeking a way to host a safe in-person experience to give back to the community while following social distancing procedures. Christine Leatherberry is the Director of Alumni Relations at the Dedman School of Law. “There is unprecedented hunger and food insecurity related to the COVID-19 pandemic and economic downturn,” Leatherberry said. This issue helped spark the idea of this volunteering opportunity. On January 30, 2021, and February 6, 2021, students and alumni teamed up to assist with the issue of hunger many individuals face.
