Mustangs wrap up season at Championships

The SMU women’s golf team wrapped up the Conference USA Championships and with it the 2009-10 season.

The Mustangs finished in fifth place out of the 10 teams at the three-round tournament.

The Championships were held at the 6,146-yard par-71 Canebrake Country Club in Hattiesburg, Miss. SMU shot 897 as a team thanks to its four top 10 finishers. They were just eight shots shy of a third place finish.

Sophomore Jennifer Hooper played well for the Mustangs. Her final round of 71 gave her a total score of 223, and a tie for 15th place.

Junior Tia Gannon and sophomore Liz Wells were close behind Hooper. They each shot 225, tying for 19th place.

Freshman Felicia Espericueta and freshman Tanya Wadhwa followed with 228 and 231.

Tulane University sophomore Ashley McKenney gave her team a first place finish for the tournament. McKenney shot 70, 68, and 72 for a total 210. Her first place finish, along with teammate Janine Fellows’ second place finish, finished for Tulane in first at 858.

The tournament was the last for the Mustang team this season. Head coach Todd Selders told smumustangs.com: “I think this gives us something to build on for next season. I’m pleased that we placed better than many predicted, but we’re not where we want to be yet.

That said, we had some players post very solid individual rounds and with such a young lineup, I know we’ll be a better team next season.”
