Dedman School of Law will honor eight individuals, including U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, at its Distinguished Alumni Awards dinner at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, in the Grand Ballroom of the Adolphus Hotel.
An honorary alumnus award recipient, also nominated by law alumni and chosen by an awards committee, has been selected since 2000 to be recognized at the awards dinner. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison was an honorary recipient in 2003. This year, the committee has chosen to honor the U.S. Attorney General. Gonzales, who was appointed as Attorney General in 2005, has served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas and as Texas’ 100th Secretary of State. He is a graduate of Rice University and Harvard Law School, and, according to the Dedman School of law website, a long-time friend of the law school.
Recipients and their guests will gather at the dinner to recognize law graduates for their professional achievements, public service, philanthropy and service to the SMU Dedman School of Law.
This year’s alumni honorees are Adelfa Botello Callejo, class of ’61; Martin Samuelsohn, class of ’41; Justice Stephen N. Limbaugh Jr., class of ’77; John H. McElhaney, class of ’58; Chief Justice Bagir Manan, class of ’81; and Raymond D. Noah, class of ’66.
Last year, Harriet Miers, class of ’70, was awarded the Storey Award for Distinguished Achievement at the dinner.
