The men’s and women’s intramural basketball season came to a close as Game Over and Free Agents were named intramural champions.
All four teams in the finals had nearly flawless records and fought relentlessly for the title of champion.
Lola’s Ladies, made up of SMU’s women’s soccer team, and the previously undefeated Free Agents competed for the women’s intramural championship. The Free Agents dominated the first half and at half time were leading 22-10. The second half intensified as the trailing Lola’s Ladies picked up their game.
“Our game got a lot more aggressive in the second half. We were making more shots, intensifying our defense, and trying to stop any three-pointers. I think that if we had played as well during the first half we would not have been behind going into the second,” said Carley Phillips of Lola’s Ladies.
Kimber Bailey of Lola’s Ladies aced several shots in the second half and narrowed the score. Bailey was later named MVP of the game for her aggressive defense and persistent offense.
The score was close throughout the second half, but the Free Agents proved their undefeated streak was not to be tampered with as they won the game 31-26.
“We played really hard this entire season,” Free Agent team member Whitney Nicholson said. “We work really well together and I think that our team chemistry really paid off and led us to the championship.”
The Free Agents will go on to play in two tournaments for SMU at Texas A&M and TCU. They are looking forward to representing SMU well, and keeping their undefeated streak intact.
The men’s intramural championship game was between Game Over and the Walk Offs. The undefeated Walk Offs started their game off on the right foot, scoring a basket in the first five seconds, but Game Over was not intimidated. In the first half both teams stayed within two to six points of eachother. After an aggressive and fast-paced first half, the undefeated Walk Offs were trailing 21-24.
As the clock hit the two-minute mark, the Walk Offs were still behind, but catching up as they narrowed the score 38- 40. Game Over pulled away in the last minute to win the title 42-38.
“No one gave us any respect coming in here, but winning the championship was all about the teamwork. We really proved ourselves,” Game Over team member Anthony Mungioli said.
