Dry weather and clear skies Tuesday showed that damage to the SMU rowing team’s boats at White Rock Lake was far less than originally feared.
According to rowing head coach Doug Wright, all the team’s racing shells survived the violent weather intact. The only boat to suffer any serious damage was a small two-person training boat known as a pair.
“There wasn’t much damage, just a lot of debris,” Wright said.
The rowing team has been raising funds to help build a permanent home for the team’s boats. Wright believes the storms, which threatened the boats and, essentially, the team’s livelihood, may spur donors to give toward the construction of a boathouse at White Rock.
“Hopefully people will recognize we need to be in a place where our stuff is secure and safe from the weather,” Wright said.
The rowing team’s next competition will be Thursday, when it hosts Kansas at White Rock. This is its second competition of the spring season. SMU won five of seven races against Creighton on March 12.
