SMU prepares to take on entire Big Ten in Badger Invitational

Mustangs hope to improve upon season opener

The SMU women’s golf team is on the road again this weekend as they travel to Madison, Wis. to participate in the Badger Invitational from Sept. 27-28.

The invitational, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will be an excellent test for the Mustangs as they go up against some of the top teams in the nation.

SMU will be one of 15 teams competing in the 54-hole tournament, and they’ll face tough competition, as all 11 teams from the Big Ten Conference will be competing. The other three teams, not from the Big Ten, are the College of Charleston, Iowa State and Georgetown University.

In last year’s Badger Invite, SMU finished 11th overall, shooting 961 while University of California, Berkeley shot 889 to take first place. Mustang alumnae, Kate Ackerson, finished fifth in last year’s invitational, shooting only five shots back of first place, with a three-round total of 220. Ackerson is now a graduate assistant coach for SMU’s golf program.

Last weekend, the team tied for 16th place at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Primm, Nev. As a team, SMU carded an 82-over 946 for 56 holes in the 18-team challenge. Freshman Tanya Wadhwa led the Mustangs with a 21-over 237 that tied her for 61st.
