SMU Police: Officers of the Night

Some of us are starting to think that the SMU police are vampires. They seem to emerge only at night, looking for students who might have had a little too much to drink. They lurk in shadows and go unnoticed by many students on campus.

“I don’t really see them around so I don’t know that much about them,” sophomore Nick Horton said.

The SMU police department focuses on the safety and security of the entire campus body.

Officers actually patrol the Hilltop 24 hours a day, not just at night. They may bust a dorm in the middle of the night for drinking fractions, but they’re also around day and night to answer questions and help students in need. They can be reached at 214-768-3333 for non-emergencies. For an emergency, call 911.

“I feel very protective with the officers around,” freshman Jordan Whatt said.

After approaching a couple of officers one evening to ask about the late-night activity on campus, I found out that I would have to have questions reviewed by Chief Richard Shafer. Chief Shafer has not returned my calls yet.
