Coach Larry Brown on values and ethics

SMU head basketball coach Larry Brown discussed values and ethics at the Maguire Ethics Lecture in Hugues-Trigg on Tuesday, September 30, 2014

SMU students, faculty and guests filed into the Hughes-Trigg Theater Tuesday night for the annual Maguire Ethics Lecture. The speaker was SMU basketball head coach Larry Brown discussing doing things “the right way” on and off the court.

When addressing ethical questions he faces during the recruiting and admission process, Brown said SMU views a potential student athlete’s character as the most imporatant deciding factor on admission.

“Talent is a gift from God, but character is a choice,” Brown said.

Brown also shared how his attitude on winning and losing games is a mindset he strives to live by off the court.

“I’ve been miserable after wins and proud after losses. If you live your life caught up on the losses you won’t get very far,” he said.

During last year’s basketball season, coach Brown coined the phrases “Play the right way” and “Finish the right way.” In a Q&A; session during the lecture, he informed the audience exactly what the means.

“When you play together and make each other better, that’s playing the right way,” Brown said.

The Maguire Ethics Lecture is cosponsored by the SMU Delta Gamma sorority.
