With the win, SMU secures its first conference championship since 1993.

After scoring only four points in the first half, Markus Kennedy dominated the paint in the second half. His 12 point second half performance helped the Mustangs pull away from Tulsa in the final minutes to secure the victory.

SMU lead 28-29 at half time. If not for the first-half heroics of James Woodard, the Mustangs would have had a much larger lead.

Woodard scored 15 of Tulsa’s 28 first half points. The junior guard did all of his damage from beyond the three point line and shot 62.5 percent from three-point range.

SMU managed to limit his effectiveness a little in the second half- holding him to 15 points in the final frame. However, his two threes inside the final minute helped keep Tulsa’s hopes alive.

He finished the night with 30 points, and was 10 of 15 from three point range.

Tulsa as a whole shot much better from three-point range than SMU, out shooting the Mustangs 46.2-20 percent from behind the arc.

Sunday was possibly SMU’s best free throw shooting night of the season. The Mustangs were 19 of 23 from the line and it made all the difference- especially when they were in the bonus for the final three and a half minutes.

SMU now looks ahead to the conference tournament in Hartford, CT. next week and will be the number one seed.
