Thousands of SMU fans gathered on the boulevard Saturday night before the Mustangs’ first conference game against UTEP.

From white dresses and cowboy boots to cookouts and tailgating games, everyone embraced the boulevarding spirit. Even SMU President R. Gerald Turner joined the festivities.

“I always start about two hours before the game and walk the whole boulevard, up and down, and say hello to everybody,” Turner said.

There were girls with mini red mustangs tattooed on their faces, children jumping in bounce-houses and students playing giant Tetris. The atmosphere was full of life.

SMU alumnus Phillip Worthen said he loves coming out before the games.

“It’s awesome. We love the boulevard, and we love having fun out here,” Worthen said while playing catch with his son.

It all ended with a march to Ford Stadium– led by Peruna. Cheerleaders, dancers, baton twirlers and the Mustang Band followed behind.

“Lay down the boogie and play that funky music til you die,” the Mustang Band sang as they marched.
