The man on the sidelines won’t be the only thing different about SMU football this season.
The SMU athletic department just announced uniform changes that will take place this season. The Mustangs will return to white helmets with a red mustang outlined in blue and have the option of wearing red, white or blue jerseys all with white pants. The Mustangs wore a white helmet until the blue helmets were introduced prior to the 2003 season.
The uniforms will be reminiscent of the successful “Pony Express” teams of the mid 1980s.
“The fans have spoken and we have listened. Since I arrived at SMU, I have stated that I wanted to return the Mustang football program to national prominence,” said SMU Director of Athletics Steve Orsini in a statement. “When people think of SMU, they think of white helmets with a red Mustang logo. When you have a rich tradition like we do here at SMU, it only makes sense to draw from that.”
The uniform change comes as SMU athletics switches from being sponsored by Nike to Adidas. All the other athletic teams changed last season, but football was on a separate contract that continued until this season.
The uniforms will be unveiled at the Kickoff Luncheon on Aug. 20.
