Success at Notre Dame

The SMU cross country team put up respectable finishes to place eighth out of 22 at the Notre Dame Cross Country Invitational Oct. 2.

The course consisted of a 5K run around the Notre Dame golf course, and many of the top-ranked cross country teams in the nation showed up to compete. Among the competitors were No. 1 Washington, No. 5 Princeton, No. 9 Florida and No. 11 Florida State.

Junior Silje Fjortoft was the first Mustang to cross the finish line, taking eighth out of 178 total runners, with a time of 16:58. Sophomore Kristine Eikrem-Engset and freshman Sara Sjokvist were the other two SMU runners to finish in the top 50.

The Mustangs are now ranked No. 26 in the nation. Next weekend they compete in either the Chile Pepper Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. or at pre-nationals in Terre Haute, Ind.
