SMU celebrates Day of the Dead

Unlike the scary ghouls that haunt trick or treaters on Halloween, the ghosts and spirits celebrated on Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, are happy and kind.

The SMU League of United Latin American Citizen Council, or the LULAC Council, is holding a Dia de los Muertos celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 8:30 p.m. in Hughes Trigg.

Dia de los Muertos is a festive Latino holiday that falls on Nov. 1. The holiday is a commemoration of loved ones that have lost their lives. Instead of grieving death, Dia de los Muertos celebrates the circle of life. Participants in the holiday believe that on Oct. 31, Heaven’s gates open and spirits of deceased children can reunite with their families for 24 hours. On Nov. 2, adult spirits come down from Heaven to enjoy the festivities.

The LULAC Council plans to celebrate this holiday with a Mariachi band performance, face painting, a local Ballet Folkloric troupe, and traditional Latino food.
