New Years resolutions: good or useless?

New Years brings around a time to reflect and make new resolutions for the upcoming year. While we are far enough now into January that many resolutions are already broken, it is doubtless that many at least tried to improve some aspect of their life with the dawn of the new year.

But with how few resolutions are actually kept, does it really mean anything? Certainly you are not missing out on much if you do not make a goal, and you may be avoiding some of the shame of failing and be better off than if you had not made any goals in the first place.

However, can it really ever be a bad thing to take stock of your life and consider where you might improve? While the lofty goals of New Years may rarely be obtained, it would seem that some introspection and consideration of where you can be better is always appropriate at the turn of the year. In our fast-paced culture, this does not get done often enough.

So while many of the goals may have been left along the wayside days (or even weeks) ago, I think that good was still effected for those who tried to make resolutions and improved for the upcoming year. Here is a resolution for us all: to have a good semester!
