If you’re looking for a movie in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, look no further than How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. It’s not only funny and sweet, but it’s a really good movie.
Although it can’t shake it’s “chick flick” label, what makes it so great is that any person can relate to the film’s scenarios.
Kate Hudson stars as Andie Anderson, a New York magazine columnist who gets an unusual assignment and has 10 days to complete it. She must find a guy, do all the things women do to drive guys away and get him to dump her in, you guessed it, 10 days.
Matthew McConaughey plays Benjamin Barry, a big, bad advertising executive who wants control of a new account at his firm. He takes a bet that he can make any woman fall in love with him.
In a phone interview McConaughey said he enjoyed his role and working with Hudson.
“The best joke is the one that you, the audience, is in on,” McConaughey said. “You know there’s something that [Ben] doesn’t know and you know the secret that [Andie] doesn’t know. And it’s funny being previed to that information.”
He also added that, “It may be a chick flick, but it’s also something for dudes.”
McConaughey said the sure-fire way to have him running in less than 10 days is to lie. It’s as simple as that ladies. Be truthful – bottom line.
Unlike most romantic comedies, the movie isn’t overly predictable. Most of the humor is completely over the top, but it’s not over done.
“A lot of times in romantic comedies the guy is sort of the foil, he doesn’t have a place to go or a finish line of his own,” McConaughey said.
However, in this film the guy definitely had his own motives and that brakes the traditional roles of a romantic comedy. Everyone is able to either see themselves or someone they know in this movie.
Seeing the trailer, Hudson and McConaughey seemed like an unlikely pair. But after seeing the movie, they couldn’t have put anyone else in their place. There was definitely chemistry.
The movie was number one during its opening weekend, raking in $23.8 million at the box office.
For those who don’t know, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is based on a little book by the same name, written by Michele Alexander and Jeannie Long.
The book basically spells out the do’s and dont’s of dating. If you already know how to lose a guy but don’t know why you’re driving them away, this book will point to the culprit.
For example, “start calling him your boyfriend by the next day. In fact, just call him. Call him again. And maybe drive by his house. Don’t forget to make him a mix tape with all of ‘your’ songs. Name his penis. And most importantly, cry after sex.”
It’s a fun little read and you’ll only be out $7.50.
