SMU Football rallies against sexual assault at home game

By: Mariah Cuellar

The SMU Mustangs will take a stand against sexual assault by wearing the color teal at this Saturday’s home game against the University of South Florida. The football team has partnered with the student organization Not On My Campus and will recognize the Genesis Women’s Shelter, the Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center and Brenda Tracy, a sexual assault survivor, in an effort to provide resources and support to the community.

Not On My Campus promotes sexual assault awareness and a healthy lifestyle by hosting various events and demonstrations throughout the school year, such as Sexual Assault Awareness Month which takes place every April.

The football team aims to bring the community together by wearing teal during the game and partnering with Not On My Campus.

“This game is a huge step forward in the effort to build awareness and its events like this that create the conversations that transform our community,” said David Shirzad, Student Representative of the Board of Trustees Athletic’s Committee.

Shirzad and the Not On My Campus team has worked with the athletics department to make Saturday a special day, both on and off the field. SMU athletics printed thousands of stickers that will be distributed at the boulevard and sell “Teal Game” T-shirts. All proceeds will benefit the Genesis Women’s Shelter and Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center

You can show your support for this movement by wearing teal or blue on game day and learn more about Not On My Campus here.
